‘Arting’
As we continue progression with our second game, the main focus continues to be the art. I may have mentioned earlier but I am no artist. However, with only 2 of us working on the game, this does tend to leave me making most of the art assets for our games. I do enjoy drawing and doing some amateur art projects, but I am not ‘talented’ and have no real training or industry knowledge.
The current game we are working on has different scenes that will be shown to the player, totaling 175... I am still putting together the art slides for each of these scenes, which consist of multiple images per scene. It’s a long, stressful, and at this point, boring job; although, I am honestly pretty pleased with how a lot of the scenes have turned out (ending no.23 is currently one of my favourites!).
This is only the first draft for the game, but I am increasingly worried with how the art of the game will be received on release. I have of course chosen a very specific art style for this game, which probably will put a percentage of players off from experiencing the game in the first place. I know myself that I would avoid certain games based on the art style. I do have a reason for my specific aesthetic, and I hope creative license and artistic style will count for something! At the end of the day, only those who like the genre of the game would give it a go anyway, and I think they will be accepting of the style.
Working on the assets is a struggle mostly with my inner voices (as usual), but I’m really trying to keep going, experiment, and have fun with it. The first responses from play-testers will determine if we need to do some drastic changes or not, otherwise, it is what it is.
Very soon the drawing process will be moving forward with edits and animations. Editing this many scenes is another daunting process, I already know some important scenes I really need to re-do, but this will ultimately improve the look and feel of the game. Hopefully, also giving me more confidence in it. Animations are minimal, but there is a very specific effect I’m looking for, which I also have no idea how to even describe, let alone do!
All part of the process!
